Conventions of a Music Video

Rihanna's 'We Found Love' follows the narrative of the lyrics showing the characters love.
Music videos generally follow a Narrative involving the members of the band or the Artist themselves.  This narrative can be following the lyrics of the video or be the artist enjoying themselves elsewhere.

In 'My Chemical Romance' they use dark coloursand in their music video
The costume, props and location match with the genre of the music or the lyric.  For example, rock artists used dark locations and darker clothing whereas pop musicians use brighter colours in their music videos.

Linking Park performing to their audience

The performance is also very important as it shows the audience the band or artist.  Many bands include their instruments to show what part they have within the band however, this is not the case in all music videos.

Analysis of Rock Videos 3

In this music video the band wear matching outfits so that they stand out from the crowd.  They wear dark clothing which is conventional for a rock band.  The band members wear the same outfit throughout, and other people in the video wear dark make-up and dark clothing.
Many shots are used in the music video including close ups and long shots.  There are also many camera movements and angles used in the video including low angled shots and also a pan.
The editing of the video matches the song, during the fast paced sections of the song the editing quickens and during the slower sections the editing is slowed down.  This fits well with the video and keeps the audience intrigued.
Lots of different locations are used in this music video, including a parade, 'The Black Parade' a burned city and a hospital room with a hospital bed.  These are all dark and dreary places which matches with the rest of the music video.
The music video follows the narration of the lyric, as the band end up playing in 'The Black Parade' which is what they band are singing about.

Analysis of Rock Videos 2

This music video is for an older rock band Guns 'n' Roses.  Even though it is an older video it follows the conventions of a rock music video.
The band members wear typical rock clothing, leather jackets and tight jeans.  All the members wear similar clothing but add their own style to it eg. bandanna or hat.
Only one location is used in the music video, as if the band are performing to an audience.  They are on a stage with the entire band performing the song.  Shots are added of females which are the band members girlfriends which intrigue a male audience.
The editing of the video is moderately paced, it fits well with the music using different shots when necessary to show different parts of the song eg solos.
High key lighting is used in this video as it is like a concert being played to the audience but as a video.

Analysis of Rock Videos 1

There are many shot types, camera angles and camera movements used in this music video.  These include close-ups, long shots, pans and high angled shots.  We are first shown the band riding motor bikes with close-ups of each band members bike.  This shows that the band are rock like because of the use of motor bikes with a black and white effect on the camera.
In the opening of the video the band members are wearing biker clothing, so they fit in with the stereotypical view of a biker.  They later change into more rock clothing, wearing studded belts and waistcoats.
The editing of the video is relatively fast paced which matches the pace of the music.  As the video develops the pace of the editing increases cutting from different shots more frequently to give the audience a feel of a party.
Not many locations are used in this video, only a party room and an empty road at the beginning.
Throughout the video the band are performing to their audience, they use lip syncing and also include performances with their instruments to show each individual member.

For our Year 13 media course we will create in groups our own music video.  We will use a British artist and the video will be one which does not have an official music video.
