Location Shots
All of these locations fit well with our genre as they are typically thought about when with young teenagers, which is the main audience of our chosen genre of Indie Rock. Also, some music videos within the genre include these locations.

Concept
Before having a group discussion this is what I thought we could do for our Music Video:
Costume: smart jeans, checkered shirt/smart shirt/polo shirt
Locations: practice room
Narration: main singer gradually getting older throughout the song
Props: guitars, drum kit, microphone, microphone stand
Lighting: High and low key lighting used throughout the video
After a discussion and mind-map created by the group we came up with our final ideas and agreed with what we believe will work well for our work.

Image Annotation
After thoroughly researching the genre, we have learned that bands that belong to the indie rock genre tend to dress quite casually, with a modern twist. This is incredibly useful to us, as we can easily attain these items of clothing and therefore can replicate the Indie image. An extremely common visual element associated with the majority of Indie bands would be skinny/drain pipe jeans, therefore we will definitely include this in the performance elements of our music video.
While researching Indie fashion we also discovered that denim is a common feature of popular Indie Group's attire. This also conforms to the casual Indie look, as the faded denim gives this "worn/faded" appearance that matches our initial ideas. They are also incredibly affordable, and easy to attain. The other image shows perhaps a more sophisticated look, although it can also enhance the "worn" image. We are considering using a similar item as many ambient Indie Groups feature them and it conveys what we wish to represent.
The images below show footwear that we believe helps us as an audience distinguish a band as being part of the Indie Rock genre. This combined with the previous elements would suggest to the audience that we are from the Indie genre, and that is obviously what we wish to convey.
The instruments below are typical instruments used by Indie Rock musicians, especially the Fender Telecaster. The implementation of hollow body guitars also adds an elegant look that conforms to the relatively smart attire of the band members. I feel that all of these elements will easily help us achieve the casual/smart Indie appearance we originally aimed to achieve. As one of the members of my group owns one of these guitars they have decided that we use his guitar so we fit in well with the indie rock genre.
Song Details
As a group we have decided to do the song Pelican by The Maccabees for our music video. We chose this song because the band are British and also fits with our genre. All of our group liked this song and felt we would be able to make a music video which could get us high grades from this music video. This song currently does not have an official music video which gives our group a blank canvas to work from. We chose the band The Maccabees because they are a British band and we all enjoy

Initial Ideas
This is a mind map of my groups initial ideas. After talking about each different option we have chosen the genre of Indie Rock use for our Music Video. I feel that this was best for our group as the majorit of my group listen to or have heard of many artists from the Indie Rock genre and watched many music videos from the genre.
Audience Research 2
From this information I know that people expect band performance, casual clothing and lip syncing in a music video, which will shall include in our music video so that it appeals to our audience. Also, many people said they enjoy music videos by You Me At Six so we could take influences from their music videos to appeal to our audience.

CD Cover Research
''''''
All 3 of these CD covers follow the conventions of an Indie Rock CD cover, as they all have the name of the band and the album name in large writing, and also the images they have decided to use are very unique as no-body has used the idea before which relates to the Indie Rock genre and being individual.
This is one of the CD Covers for artist Two Door Cinema Club. This is interesting as they have used the familiar circles of a cats eyes to show the o's of the word 'Door'. This cover has relatively low key lighting and has very few colours used in the cover. The use of having a thinner style of writing for the O's and C's is different and makes them individual from the other artists and stand out from the crowd. We could use a cover similar to this as the artist Two Door Cinema Club fall into the same genre that we have chosen.
Unlike the CD Cover for Two Door Cinema Club the cover for The Wombats is very colourful and bright. The use of bright colours makes it noticeable and unique. The font of the writing reminds me of someone's diary, which relates to the title of 'A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation.' Also, unlike the other CD Cover high key lighting is used in this CD Cover which makes it bright and stand out. We could use a cover similar to this as the artist The Wombats fall into the same genre that we have chosen.
In this CD cover few colours are seen, this is because an effect has been added to the image which makes it seem older. This is similar to the CD Cover by Two Door Cinema Club as it has few colours but more high key lighting rather then low key. The font used in this cover is bold and easy to read, using a larger font for the band's name to make it stand out more. We could use a cover similar to this as the artist You Me At Six fall into the same genre that we have chosen.Unlike the CD Cover for Two Door Cinema Club the cover for The Wombats is very colourful and bright. Theories 2
Carol Vernallis Theory - The Kindest Cuts: Linkin Park - In The End
This music video follows many of Vernallis theories on Music Videos however, there are a few things which are not included.
Multiplicity of incomplete sometimes obscure paths.
Order of shots - unconventional. Shifts more freely between shots. no typical shot order.
In this video by Linkin Park the music video does not have a specific shot order, and switches between different shots throughout. Although you generally see the person who is singing the type of shots used to show these people change throughout.
Time space, character and narrative are revealed incompletely.
If you listen to the lyrics of this music video they do not relate at all to the music video itself, and the music video does not follow a clear narrative. All we know is there are two members of this band and that they are somewhere in the future due the the animals which are seen. This could be either the future or somewhere in outer space. However, the characters of this music video are shown immediately which does not follow Vernallis theory.
Discontinuity - Pop video draws us away from the narrative by foregrounding other structures and elements. eg. music/star
In this music video we are mainly drawn to the singers/star and what they are doing, rather then what is happening behind them and the narrative of the video.
Visual hooks create continuity. Graphic match - figure/shape/colour/setting
In this music video there are not really any hooks which join different hots together, other then the positioning of the stars as often when they cut from one to another they are positioned in the same place on screen. This does draw in the audience and makes them feel as though the two are one.
Sometimes all elements (colour/editing/star etc.) are equal - sometimes one is dominant over the others.
In this music video, all the elements are equal, with no particular focus on one specific element.

Conventions of a Music Video
Rihanna's 'We Found Love' follows the narrative of the lyrics showing the characters love. |
In 'My Chemical Romance' they use dark coloursand in their music video |
Linking Park performing to their audience |
The performance is also very important as it shows the audience the band or artist. Many bands include their instruments to show what part they have within the band however, this is not the case in all music videos.
